MC call on 17 December 2020

Meeting Summary Points

  • The budget looks good, there is sufficient funding to finish this fiscal year while also moving EUR €28k from this FY to the next so we have contingency for next year.  MC members asked for some clarifying questions which were addressed.
  • Nils introduced the new webpage to the MC, and walked everyone through the structure and new features, explaining that the new webpage is being optimised for presentation on both computers and smartphone/tablet devices.  The MC discussed their concerns over requiring the public to register in order to download publications, highlighting concerns over information funded by taxpayers should be free and that it may look to industry like we are being more secretive.
  • The Expert Meetings in November were successful, with high levels of attendance by both Experts and MC, and good progress being made on all of the Tasks.  The Annex is currently finding a date for the country update presentations which will take place in January.
  • The OA updated the MC on the progress with the various Tasks, starting with IC 2017.  All participant reports have been issued and the team is now focusing on preparing the Final Report. We are discussing with Yoshi the possibility of holding a webinar and writing papers about the final results.
  • The Lighting Research Centre has nearly completed their work on the lifetime testing literature review and will send that to us shortly.  The OA will compare the revisions they made against the comments submitted by the Experts in the last round.
  • Peter discussed a new ‘voluntary contribution’ from Sweden focusing on SVM and PstLM to help support the work on Task 8, the secure database.  Sweden has tested over 800 products and found that 2/3rds already comply with the Commission’s requirements.  The idea is to help inform the SSL Community out there because not everyone knows the status of the market.  Peter proposes that the SSL Annex prepare ‘Technical Note’ to show the results from all this testing.
  • Australia is sponsoring a new Expert named Sarah Loughran from the Radiation and Nuclear Protection Authority who will support Task 1 on Health and LED Lighting.  Sarah has a range of experience in photometric issues, including extensive research on circadian rhythms.
  • Suleiman updated everyone on the progress the UK government was making in preparation for COP26 developing “performance ladders” for lighting, refrigerators, air-conditioning and motors.  On lighting, they are referencing the draft performance tiers (Task 6), but this will need to be checked.
  • Jennifer updated us that she expects her Correspondence concerning the Signify SVM paper will be published in the coming weeks.  It will be freely available.
  • The MC discussed five conferences that are coming up this year and whether some of the research and reports should be incorporated into these as papers.  A small subgroup of MC will be formed to discuss this in detail.
  • Casper informed everyone that he has been raising awareness in Denmark about his smart lighting research, at the request of the Danish Energy Agency.

Action Items

  • Nils will introduce a new budget reporting format in the coming Fiscal Year which will be much clearer and easier for everyone to understand.
  • Nils encouraged MC members who had concerns about requiring visitors to the website to register to write to 4E OA Mark Ellis and Jamie Hulan, Chair of the 4E ExCo.
  • The MC asked that we conduct a survey of the Experts on what they thought of the webinars and if we should do anything differently next time.
  • Mike will follow-up with Yoshi to discuss the timing of the Final Report, holding an SSL Annex webinar announcing the results and what papers he is thinking about for IC 2017.
  • Mike will review the revised Lifetime Literature Review from LRC and ascertain whether they addressed the last round of comments submitted by the Experts.  If so, then we will issue the final payment.
  • Mike will review the Task 1 Doodle Poll and schedule a meeting in January for the Task Leaders, David and Sarah Loughran.
  • Mike will follow-up with Suleiman to obtain a copy of the performance ladder for lighting for COP26 and share that with the Task 6 Leader (Steve Coyne).
  • Nils will form a subgroup of the MC to look at the five conferences and decide which papers will be submitted to each.
