The adoption of Wide Bandgap (WBG) semiconductors in industrial Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) presents multiple advantages, including improved efficiency, reduced cooling requirements and smaller form factors. Despite their numerous advantages, the adoption of WBG industrial VSDs faces several challenges.
Ongoing research and development efforts continue to address these challenges, aiming to reduce cost, improve reliability and expand the support infrastructure for WBG technology. By documenting these improvements, EMSA in cooperation with PECTA will develop a White Book by 2028, aiming to address the barriers to the adoption of Silicon Carbide (SiC) and Gallium Nitride (GaN) for industrial VSDs.
A WBG Research Roadmap has been developed, detailing the aspects to be considered in ongoing and planned research activities, according to different research topics.
