Digitalisation in motor systems: new insights

Which digital technologies are most used with motor driven systems? How much energy can be saved thanks to digital solutions in motor systems? What are the main advantages and disadvantages of using digital technologies? The IEA 4E Electric Motor Systems Annex survey with over 100 respondents worldwide delivers answers to these questions, summarised in this new Policy Brief.

The IEA 4E Electric Motor Systems Annex conducted a global survey in 2020 concerning the digitalisation of electric motor systems. A new Policy Brief is now available, summarising the key findings.

Some of the key insights:

  • Smart sensors, smart control and continuous monitoring are the digital technologies most used by industrial users in conjunction with motor driven systems.
  • The lack of qualified staff and high investment costs are perceived as main barriers to greater uptake of digital technologies.
  • Respondents consider the development of training programmes, the standardisation of protocols and subsidies for research as important policy instruments to overcome the barriers mentioned above.
  • Good technical solutions for cybersecurity and the availability of qualified staff are the most significant enablers.
  • Around half of the respondents considered the saving potential to be between 6% and 20% thanks to the use of digital technologies.
