WTO Seminar on Trade and Climate in Copenhagen

More than 200 participants from all over the world participated in the one day WTO Seminar on Trade and Climate in Copenhagen May 9 2008. Participants were welcomed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Per Stig Møller.

Important issues regarding trade and environment issues were presented, amongst others, by UK Minister for Trade and Development, Mr. Gareth Thomas, and Chief Executive at International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development, Mr. Ricardo Melendez Ortiz.

The second part of the seminar was opened by the Danish Ministry of Climate and Energy. In the presentation the issue of mandatory energy performance standards on a global scale was raised. The presentaiton opened the discussion on how to handle international environemental strategies regarding consumption of energy in electrical appliances.

The challenge of energy standards labelling and energy efficiency is central to the work done within the 4E Implementing agreement. Knowledge sharing, mapping and international cooperation on energy efficiency standards will particularly be the subject matter of the 4E Mapping & Benchmarking Annex.
