In the January/February 2026 issue of LED Professional Magazine, Dr. J. Norman Bardsley, Chief Analyst for the International Solid-State Lighting Alliance (ISA) in Beijing, China, published an article that looks at the global lighting market and the opportunity for energy savings. In addition to providing insights on the market trends from data provided by the SSLC Platform, the report concludes that lighting’s share of global electricity use has fallen from approximately 19% in 2000 to about 12% in 2025, even while absolute consumption has increased from 2,650 TWh to about 3,600 TWh over the same time period. The average efficacy of light sources has roughly doubled with the introduction of solid-state lighting, but if lighting is to make a major contribution to the amelioration of global climate change, further R&D on efficiency, systems and controls is needed.
