International Lighting Seminar: Perspectives on Sustainability, Performance, Health & Smart Lighting

On 27 March 2023, the IEA 4E SSL Annex organised an international lighting seminar in cooperation with the Swedish Energy Agency.  This seminar was held in Stockholm and offered lighting experts and stakeholders a unique opportunity to learn about the work of the SSL Annex’s international experts and to gain insight into a number of important current issues:

  • What is happening in ecodesign?
  • How did international co-operation on market data accelerate the phase out of fluorescent lamps in Europe?
  • Resource efficiency, product longevity and reparability – the next big challenge?
  • Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation
  • How declared performance differs from test results – and what we can do about it?
  • A test method cheaper, more realistic and easier evaluation of durability (now used in the Ecodesign Regulation)
  • SSL Annex’s recommended requirements for lighting products – and how they can be used
  • International comparisons of laboratories’ testing capacity – the third global test begins
  • Smart lighting – and energy smart lighting
  • New ways to describe colour and colour rendering – what could be the standard of the future?
  • Reducing light modulation for health and well-being – not just a matter of vision

Speakers in this International Lighting Seminar included:

  • Prof Georges Zissis, Chair of the SSL Annex, La Place University Toulouse (Moderator)
  • Nils Borg, Operating Agent, Borg & Co, Sweden
  • Peter Bennich, Senior Advisor, Energimyndigheten, Sweden
  • Prof Carl Dalhammar, International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics, Lund University, Sweden
  • Steve Coyne, Light Naturally, Australia
  • Casper Kofod, Director, Energy Piano, Denmark
  • Dr Yoshi Ohno, NIST Fellow, National Institute of Standards and Technology, USA
  • Dr Jennifer Veitch, National Research Council of Canada

About the IEA 4E SSL Annex.  The SSL-Annex is managed by six countries (Australia, Denmark, France, South Korea, Sweden and the UK) within the framework of the IEA’s 4E (Energy Efficient End-use Equipment) technology co-operation, in which some 15 countries participate. In cooperation with test labs and international stakeholders, SSL-Annex experts evaluate test methods and test capacity of labs, compare claims with test data, develop general and harmonised requirements for lighting products that can be used by individual countries and international organisations. In addition, new technology applications such as smart lighting technology, LiFi, etc. are monitored and analysed. Light and health is an important aspect of the cooperation as energy efficient lighting should never have negative health effects.
