In 2018 EDNA developed a Total Energy Model (TEM) for connected devices, including an associated report and policy brief. The objective was to develop a quantitative model of the ‘total energy use’ of connected devices, globally. The model considers a number of product categories and combines information on the stock of devices, and the allocation of energy consumption, to quantify the total additional energy consumption of devices when connected to a communications network.
In 2020 the TEM is being extended in order to:
- Expand the data content of the TEM.
- Develop and quantify selected scenarios of interest for policy-makers.
- Adapt these and other aspects of the TEM for interactive, online use.
A V2.0 report, and associated online content, was published in 2021.
