Jeju Island lies in the Korea Strait, southwest of South Jeolla Province, of which it was a part before it became a seperate province in 1946. Jeju Island has a temperate climate and even in winter, the temperature rarely falls below freezing point, and therefore is a popular vacation spot. The majority of flights to Jeju International airport are either via Seoul's domestic airport or Busan. There are a number of other flights available from other Asian cities also.
Jeju was named one of the New 7 Wonders of nature in 2011. UNESCO designated Jeju a Biosphere Reserve in 2001, World Natural Heritage in 2007, and listed it as a Global Geopark in 2010.
