The deployment of network-connected, next-generation sensors, controls, and communication technologies provides great opportunities to utilize collected data in real-time, in order to optimize the operation of buildings and other energy-using sites, and drive increased system efficiency.
Following the work of the Connected Devices Alliance, EDNA has commissioned a report that investigates government policy opportunities for encouraging energy savings enabled by information and communication technologies (“intelligent efficiency”).
EDNA was conceived from government concern that the proliferation of network-connected devices brought about by the Internet of Things, can result in an increase in the energy consumption due to the power consumed in networked standby mode. Government policies that focus on reducing the energy consumption of appliances, equipment, and other devices (such as mandatory or voluntary energy conservation standards) have rightfully expressed concern regarding the potential increase in energy consumption as more and more products gain network functionality.
The aim of this study however is to identify and analyse the range of government policy options that could be used to stimulate greater intelligent efficiency, as well as exploring the relationship between intelligent efficiency and product-specific efficiency programs (such as mandatory and voluntary appliance standards programs and how they might support intelligent efficiency).
